Ecouges Canyon – a legendary vertical descent in the Vercors

Located in the Vercors mountains of Isère, the Ecouges Canyon is one of the most iconic vertical routes in France.
It is also the only expert canyon in our selection located outside Haute-Savoie, a true exception thanks to its unique character: powerful waterfalls, deep gorges and highly technical rope work.

The upper section of Ecouges offers full immersion into a spectacular mineral gorge.
Here, commitment is constant: long vertical abseils, water-flow passages and an impressive, echoing atmosphere.

A route reserved for experienced canyoners looking to take on a technical and demanding benchmark.

A powerful and technical canyon

The Ecouges Canyon stands out for its steep verticality and its majestic, enclosed environment.
Waterfalls follow one another inside a deep limestone corridor shaped over thousands of years.

FAQ – Écouges Canyon

➡️ Why is a canyon in the Vercors included in the catalogue of a Haute-Savoie guide?

The Écouges is the only exception in the Yaute Canyon catalogue — the only route outside Haute-Savoie — and it's intentional. The Écouges is a national reference in expert canyoning, one of those routes that every confirmed canyoner should experience at least once. The guide offers this outing as a standalone experience for those who want to take on a legendary canyon led by a state-certified professional.

➡️ What sets the Écouges apart from the Salvadon and Pointe Percée expert canyons?

The atmosphere is radically different. Where the Salvadon is a wild mountain gorge and the Pointe Percée an airy canyon with Mont-Blanc views, the Écouges plunges into a dark and powerful limestone chasm in the Vercors. The enclosure is impressive, the waterfalls massive, and the flow is often far stronger. It is the most aquatically demanding of the three expert canyons.

➡️ What does "water flow management" mean as a prerequisite?

In the Écouges, water is present constantly and with force. Some abseils are done directly under waterfalls, others with a lateral flow that throws you off balance. Being able to manage your descent in powerful water — holding position, controlling speed, anticipating eddies — is an essential technical skill. This is not a canyon where you learn to handle water: you need to already know how.

➡️ What is the logistics for the Écouges?

The canyon starts at the Col de Roméyères, around 30 minutes from Grenoble. The approach is short — just 20 minutes — and the return takes 10 minutes. The meeting point is arranged directly with the guide depending on where you are coming from. Carpooling is possible from the region. Allow 4.5 to 5 hours for the descent.

➡️ What is the best time of year for the Écouges?

Like the Pointe Percée, the Écouges is best done off-season with a suitable water level — neither too high nor too low. Spring and autumn are generally the ideal windows. The guide checks conditions before every outing: contact him to find out the best available dates.
